History & Significance of the festival

According to Hindu mythology, this festival celebrated by all Shri Krishna devotees on the birthday of Lord Krishna who was born as the eight avatar or incarnation of Shri Vishnu on Ashtami tithi, Bhadrapada month (July-August).  This is also called as Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, Krishna jayanthi, Krishnashtami or Srijayanthi.  It is celebrated more grandly in the cities of Mathura and Brindhavan where lord Krishna was believed to be born and spent his early childhood.  He was born to destroy the demon king of Mathura - Kamsa who was his maternal uncle.  Though his uncle killed 6 children before his birth and the seventh child Balarama as a fetus was transferred from Devaki’s womb to Rohini’s womb, this eighth child Krishna was rescued and sent to Yashodha’s house through Vasudeva and he returned with a girl baby to Kamsa.  When Kamsa attempted to kill the girl child she transformed into Durga devi and warned him of his impending doom.  Finally, Krishna grew up in Brindhavan and killed Kamsa to establish dharma in this world.

Usual Celebration Methods

It’s quite normal to chant and pray on this day additionally people also observe fasting.  They also decorate their home with flowers, Rangoli, diya and beautiful new Krishna idols made of clay or other material of their choice.  Stealing butter from earthen pots which is also called as Dahi Handi celebrations in Maharashtra, India is done on this day where people form a human pyramid to reach and break the matka pot.

Young children are made to dress up like Radha and Krishna on this day with a flute and crown looking admirable and cute by all of us.  A few costume tips are as follows:

·         A peacock feather under your child’s headband or crown adds up to their Krishna or Radha looks along with pretty costumes

·         A flute made out of cardboard, color tapes, glitter and stone decorations on it will be the right property for them.

·         Dhoti, crown and butter pot are other elements you can use to dress up your child along with wonderful gold or fancy accessories.

Krishna Jayanthi Vrata Rules
